Tips for a Tidy Family Room
Hiring SaniClean Solutions to help keep your spaces clean and tidy is a great start, but between cleanings a busy life with family and pets can make a mess of even the best organized spaces. The family living room always seems to take the brunt of the mess, but keeping a family rooms tidy all year long is totally possible — you just need realistic systems, kid and pet friendly solutions, and a little consistency. Here are some practical strategies that we use in our own home; daily and weekly routines, storage ideas, and quick-clean tactics that make an inviting, organized living space easier to maintain.
Why this matters
A tidy living room reduces stress and makes the space more usable for family time.
It cuts cleaning time in the long run and lowers hazards for kids and pets.
Organizing and protecting finishes helps to extend the life of floors, furniture, and decor.
Set up the space for success
Choose durable, washable materials: high performance fabrics for upholstery and stain-resistant rugs stand up better to everyday traffic, spills and muddy paws. Microfiber and Crypton-like materials are good choices that respond well to deep cleaning methods when needed and will last a for years if cleaned regularly.
Round edges and stable furniture: Pick coffee tables and shelving with rounded corners and sturdy bases so kids can climb less easily and items won’t tip as easily.
Surface strategy: Minimize flat, clutter-attracting surfaces. Use closed storage—baskets with lids, storage ottomans, cabinets—whenever practical.
Pet zones and kid zones: Designate a pet bed or mat and a toy corner for kids. When toys and pet beds have a “home,” it’s easier to put things away.
Daily habits that make a big difference
The 10-Minute Tidy: Before bedtime, do a quick sweep—gather toys into one basket, throw blankets in a laundry bin or over the back of a couch, and stash stray shoes. Building this routine as a family may seem like a chore at first, but it becomes part of the normal routine quickly and is a habit that can last a lifetime.
One-surface rule: Keep one main surface (coffee table or console) clear each evening so there’s a place to put daily items and prevent pile-up.
Reset after activities: Teach kids to put away one activity before starting another. Same for pet supplies—tuck toys back into a bin after play.
Immediate spot-cleaning: Wipe spills and pet accidents right away to prevent stains and odors. Keep a small caddy with wipes, odor neutralizer, and a microfiber cloth nearby. We have some favorites when it comes to natural cleaning supplies. Just ask us, we love talking shop!
Smart storage solutions
Multi-use furniture: Storage ottomans, benches, and coffee tables with compartments hide clutter while providing seating or tabletop space.
Baskets and bins: Use labeled baskets on low shelves for toys, stuffed animals, and pet toys. Open bins let kids see what’s inside so they can help put things away.
Vertical storage: Floating shelves and tall cabinets free up floor space and keep fragile items out of reach.
Toy rotation: Keep only a portion of toys accessible and store the rest. Rotate toys every few weeks to keep interest high and clutter low. This has worked really well in our own home!
A “landing” station: A small entry console or shelf holds pet leashes, keys, and incoming mail so these don’t end up scattered in the living room or on the kitchen table.
Kid-friendly organizing systems
Low, labeled bins: Picture labels for younger kids and written labels for older ones improve independence.
Color-coded baskets: Assign colors by child or by type of toy (blocks, art supplies, books).
Routine charts: A simple checklist or chart by the play area helps kids remember tidy-up steps and turns tidying into a habit.
Pet-friendly cleaning and containment
Pet-specific storage: Keep leashes, treats, grooming tools, and toys in one organized caddy or drawer. Wipe down the caddy regularly.
Contain shedding: Designate a frequent-vacuuming schedule and use lint rollers or a rubber broom to grab hair from upholstery and rugs.
Easy-clean surfaces under pet spots: Put washable mats under feeding areas and pet beds to protect floors and make cleaning easy.
Manage tracking: Use doormats, a grooming brush at the door, and a towel for quick paw-drying to reduce dirt tracked into the living room.
Cleaning schedule (simple and realistic)
Daily (10 minutes): Quick toy tidy; fluff pillows and fold blankets; wipe crumbs off of flat surfaces; sweep or vacuum high-traffic spots if needed.
Weekly (15–30 minutes): Vacuum couches, rugs, and under furniture edges; wipe down surfaces, remotes, and light switches; vacuum and mop floors; vacuum pet beds and clean bowls.
Monthly: (If you don’t have one of our cleaners servicing your home at least monthly…) Vacuum all floors, clean behind and under furniture, dust all horizontal surfaces high and low, dust baseboards, dust light fixtures, declutter shelves and drawers, wash throw blankets and slip covers if needed.
Seasonal: Spot clean walls, purge broken or outgrown toys; check and replace pet bedding if needed, check upholstery, carpet and rugs for stains and spot clean if needed.
Yearly: Deep clean upholstery and carpets with a residential extractor or save time by scheduling a yearly carpet and upholstery cleaning service with us.
Fast fixes for unexpected messes
Quick odor control for pet messes: Remove solids, blot liquid immediately, sprinkle baking soda, let sit 10–15 minutes, then vacuum. Follow with an enzymatic cleaner and extract with plain water for pet stains.
Liquid spill on carpet or upholstery: Our SaniGuard upholstery and carpet sealer helps to prevent liquids from staining, but even without protection you can help to lessen the damage by blotting with paper towels or a clean dry cloth, depending on the type of material and liquid spilled there are many options for removing fresh stains. However, make sure not to mix chemicals and be careful of using chemicals with the wrong pH level on certain materials, as this can be harmful to you and your surfaces, or set stains making them much harder to remove in the future. Feel free to give us a call and ask the pros, we love to help and talk chemistry!
